Skin Cancer Surgery
Skin Cancer is extremely common in Australia due not only to our outdoor lifestyle and hot climate but due also to the excessive amount of UV radiation that permeates our environment due to the ozone hole. Skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma are the most common, melanoma being the most threatening of them. To ensure that all skin cancers are completely removed Dr Hodgkinson, a long standing proponent of Mohs Surgery, works closely with histopathologists to ensure at the time of excision that all cancer cells are removed prior to reconstruction. This can generally take place in one phase.
Breast Cancer Reconstruction Surgery
Breast Cancer Reconstruction can be carried out either with the patient’s own tissues or with the use of an implant. Typically, autogenous reconstructions use either a “flap” of tissue from the back (the latissmus flap) or the tummy (the TRAM flap). The ability to reconstruct using these methods will depend upon the amount of tissue the patient has and in which area and whether or not the tissues have been affected by radiation during treatment for the cancer. Breast Implants can also be used to restore fullness to the breast.
Cleft Lip and Palate Corrective Surgery
This type of surgery is an area in which few surgeons in developed nations have an opportunity to become expert unless they are in a cleft center due to the low incidence of this birth defect. Dr Hodgkinson, has a high level expertise in cleft lip and palate surgery through his charitable work in developing nations over the last 30 years including nearly 20 years as the founder and director of Operation Restore Hope a charity in the Philippines for the surgical correction of cleft lip and palate for less fortunate children. www.operationrestorehope.org
