About The Procedure

Dr. Hodgkinson – consultant plastic surgeon to the Skin & Cancer Foundation and treats simple and complex deformities associated with the resection of facial and body skin malignancy.

Due to a combination of tropical and sub-tropical sun, our country’s location under the hole in the Ozone layer and a high proportion of fair-skinned population, Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Studies have shown that about 2 out of 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70.

The three most common cancers of the skin are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Most skin cancers are best removed surgically, and if on the face or other difficult areas, by a plastic surgeon, as more complex surgery may be required.

Dr. Hodgkinson works closely with dermato-histo pathologists to assure the most complete excision of the malignancy is achieved at the initial operation to maximize the potential for cure. This method is known as Moh’s Surgery.

Moh’s surgery has been embraced over the past decade by an increasing number of surgeons for an increasingly wide variety of skin cancers. Dr Hodgkinson believes Moh’s surgery to be the most effective technique for removing Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (BCCs and SCCs), the two most common skin cancers. It spares the greatest amount of healthy tissue while also most completely expunging cancer cells; cure rates for BCC and SCC are 98% or higher with this method, significantly better than the rates for standard excision.

A vast variety of reconstructive options exist and new treatments for skin cancer are appearing and evolving rapidly. One of note however that Dr. Hodgkinson tries to avoid is the use of skin grafts, due to their unattractive appearance.

Dr. Hodgkinson has published widely on skin cancer and has a dedicated web site which shows numerous examples of skin cancer reconstruction.
