Dr Hodgkinson Honoured as 1 of 50 Plastic Surgeons from 5 Continents for the ISAPS 50th Anniversary Olympiad

This year ISAPS (the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) is celebrating its 50th anniversary.  In honour of the occasion the society is hosting a virtual Olympiad.  This virtual event will feature 50 of the top plastic surgeons from around the globe who are leaders in the field. *   They will present papers to the wider industry on various topics covering plastic surgery from head to toe.

Dr Darryl Hodgkinson is honoured to be chosen as 1 of the 50 for his work on necklifting in conjunction with facelifting. In fact, he is the only surgeon from Australia or New Zealand to be chosen for this prestigious opportunity.  The title of his presentation will be “Lower Neck Rejuvenation Using a Modified Fogli Vertical Platysmaplasty.  Appreciation of the Significance of Re-Establishing a Sensual Neck”

Dr Hodgkinson will present on Necklifting with Facelifting

Dr Hodgkinson has been developing his technique on necklifting and facelifting throughout his career but it is in the past decade that it has begun to draw international attention.   This recognition also comes from him lecturing internationally, publishing innumerable articles and even being asked to write a chapter on the surgical management of the neck in a plastic surgical textbook entitled “Aesthetic Surgery Techniques” by renowned plastic surgeons, Frame, Bagheri, Smith and Khan which was published by Elsevier in 2019.  He is excited to be able to share his most recent developments and surgical results again in this up and coming pivotal event.

Dr Hodgkinson realised many years ago that many facelifts addressed the aesthetic regions of the face such as the mid-face, nasolabial folds or jowls but did not address the neck. One of the tell-tale signs of a facelift used to be a face that appeared “tight” while the neck was still lax.  To combat this, Dr Hodgkinson became one of the early proponents of Pan-Facial Rejuvenation.  Pan-Facial Rejuvenation refers to  an approach which combines procedures as necessary to address the various aesthetic units of the face simultaneously to achieve an overall more youthful appearance.  For example, a patient might have a facelift, necklift and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) at the same time. This results not only in more youthful but a harmonious and natural appearance as well.

Dr Hodgkinson, however, made advancements even here in expanding the aesthetic unit of the neck from just the jawline to extend down to the clavicles.  It is his published developments and results in the aesthetic surgery of the neck in combination with facial rejuvenation surgery  that he will share with the wider membership of ISAPS this September.

ISAPS is an arbiter of quality and responsibility in plastic surgery worldwide

ISAPS plays a very special role in the aesthetic plastic surgical field worldwide as an arbiter of quality and responsible communications for the surgeon and patient alike.  Membership provides an invaluable platform for aesthetic plastic surgeons to share developments and ensure that they are up-to-date with the industry worldwide.

The society began in 1970 with a small group of surgeons, many leaders in the field, who realised that in any field, but especially in medicine, that knowledge and developments needed to be shared and shared widely.  Prior to this, surgeons would typically publish in the journals of their country and attend the meetings and conferences of their national bodies and societies.  ISAPS set out to change this and to broaden the horizons of the aesthetic plastic surgeon to benefit both the profession and the patients it serves alike.

From these beginnings, ISAPS has grown to have members from over 107 countries and has created a Global Alliance of more than 85 participating societies and organisations.  Dr Hodgkinson has been a member of ISAPS for nearly thirty years and in that time has been on the faculty at meetings around the world as well as serving on scientific committees and the editorial board of the society’s journal “Aesthetic Plastic Surgery”.

Dr Hodgkinson congratulates all the surgeons not only who are among this prestigious 50 but those who have given so generously to profession and to ISAPS over the half century.  Special congratulations to ISAPS President Dr Dirk Richter, a renowned plastic surgeon from Germany as he hands over the Presidency to Turkish plastic surgeon Dr Nazim Cerkes, both of whom are also numbered in the 50 who will be presenting at the Olympiad.
