What is a Mummy Makeover?

A “mummy make-over” is a one stage procedure of restoring the body contour by performing a breast augmentation or lift, a tummy tuck and liposuction, with the goal of providing patients with a harmonic result, and returning the body to a pre-pregnancy aesthetic. The surgery is tailored and customized to each patient’s individual needs and body goals. A study of over 151 consecutive cases from California confirms that there is no increase in risk from combining these procedures on an outpatient surgical basis.

Breast Augmentation

Following pregnancy, one of the more common issues women experience is related to the appearance of theirs breasts, which can go beyond the common perception of sagging. Nipples can change, areolas can grow in size, and breasts can actually lose volume, with breast deflation or decreased breast size, becoming a very common complaint. Correcting these issues depends more on the patient’s needs and body goals, but the procedures involved could include a breast lift, breast reshaping, breast augmentation or breast reduction.

Tummy Tuck

Post-pregnancy body concerns about the abdominal area range from stretch marks, excess skin, abdominal muscle separation (which can lead to hernias or diastasis recti in some instances), and an excess in the lower abdominal fat pad. The goal of a Tummy Tuck surgery is to remove sagging skin and excess fat from the middle and lower abdomen and repair any separated muscles giving the patient a flatter, firmer and shapelier abdomen. Scars vary, but are held inconspicuously in a bikini bottom.

Liposuction

Today, there are an ever-increasing number of types of liposuction (suction-assisted lipectomy, ultrasonic assisted liposculpture, power assisted liposculpture and the tumescent technique).  Which technique, or combination of techniques, is used will vary based on the patient’s specific body composition, but a liposuction helps to improve the body’s contours and proportion by removing excess fat deposits and is of great assistance in restoring a woman’s pre-pregnancy body.

Many Australian woman experience discomfort with their post-pregnancy body, and being able to get into swimwear and wear nicer, sexier clothes without unattractive bulges, or to remove skin which is wrinkled and/or torn from pregnancy, results in patients who are more confident in themselves. While some women feel that once their children start school, it is time to treat themselves to a “mummy make-over”, other women desire a more immediate change, and others finally get the opportunity later in life to restore their youthful figure.
