Pan Facial Rejuvenation
The art of combining Facelifting with other procedures to create an overall more youthful appearance.
Face Lift, Neck Lift, Eyelid Surgery and Chemical Peel
As we get older, every part of our body is undergoing an ageing process. While everyone has different genetics and lifestyle habits such as sun exposure, alcohol consumption and exercise regimes that can affect our ageing processes, every part of our body both inside and out is changing with the passage of time. The various aesthetic units of our faces from our brow to our eyes, cheeks, lips, jowls and neck are all ageing in their own individual pattern according to our destiny and our behaviours. What is true is that as no two faces are alike, no two ageing processes will be identical either.
A highly skilled plastic surgeon in assessing the ageing of the face will assess each aesthetic structure and how it has changed over time due to the loss of elasticity, discolouration and texture of the skin, the loss of fat and volume to the face and laxity of the musculature and structures of the face.
The most common complaints that patients present with for facial rejuvenation surgery are saggy necklines and droopy eyelids. These can, however, and more often than not do occur together as one ages. Therefore, to correct one and not the other will result in the patient having an obviously operated on look if they have the taut and firm neck and jawline of someone normally in their early middle years but the eyelids of someone much older.
The procedures associated with panfacial rejuvenation are:
- Facelift (Rhytidectomy): to correct the laxity and lines in the mid and lower third of the face
- Necklift (Platysmaplasty): to correct the sagging and lines of the neck
- Browlift: to correct the descent and/or furling of the brow
- Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty): to correct the drooping of the upper eyelids and the bulging of the lower eyelids or both
- Cheek Implants: to correct loss of volume to the mid third of the face
- Laserbrasion/Dermbrasion: to correct excessing fine lines such as smokers lines arond the mouth
- Chemical Peels: to correct pigmentation from excessive sun exposure
- Fat Injecton (Lipoinjection): to restore volume to areas of the face that have lost their former fullness
To create a natural result, the trick is for the expert plastic surgeon to be able to determine which procedures are appropriate for the patient and how far to go with each procedure so that the overall appearance is uniform, natural and attractive. The obviously “operated on” look occurs when the surgeon either does too much and removes the lines of expression or over-volumises the face with fat injections or does too little and performs a tight facelift and leaves the neck untouched.
Of course, communication and cooperation with the patient is key in pan facial rejuvenation as it is in all plastic surgery. It is important for the patient to communicate their goals for surgery with their surgeon and for the surgeon to communicate with the patient what type of results the patient can realistically expect. This takes cooperation and understanding. It is also of paramount importance that the patient be a partner in the surgical process by following all of their pre and post operative instructions. Just as our behaviours can affect our ageing, they can affect our healing.
It takes years of experience to be an expert at pan facial rejuvenation as you have to not only have perfected each and every one of the operations involved in pan facial rejuvenation but be able to perform them in conjunction with one another to create the overall more youthful appearance which is the end goal of this combined approach. Dr. Hodgkinson is a recognised expert in the field of plastic surgery and in pan facial rejuvenation in particular with over 30 years of experience in each and every one of these procedures individually and collectively.
