Getting rid of bags under your eyes – A surgical solution

Patients often present to us with “bags under their eyes”.  These bags occur in both women and men and occur predominantly around or after the age of 50.  What causes these bags is a combination of both genetics and lifestyle.  As we age, not only does our skin lose elasticity but our fat pads break down and redistribute themselves.  This process can lead to the formation of these bulging fat pads that give the appearance of not only being old but of being sad, angry or dishevelled as well.

Eye bag surgery

The procedure to remove bags under your eyes  is called a lower lid blepharoplasty.  Dr Hodgkinson uses the trans-conjunctival technique whenever appropriate.  In this technique, there are no scars on the outside of the eyelid as the fat pads are removed through very small incisions inside the eyelid and any excess tissue is either removed surgically or tightened with the use of lasers as appropriate.

The results of lower eyelid surgery are dramatic yet the appearance remains natural as the youthful definition of the eyes and hence their expressiveness is restored.

This surgery is very technical and requires a very high level of expertise.  Those not highly experienced in lower eyelid blepharoplasty risk creating ophthalmological problems such as ectropion or dry eye not to mention an abnormal “bull dog” appearance through too much resection of tissue.  Dr Hodgkinson has over 35 years of experience with these procedures and often combines lower lid blepharoplasty with upper eyelid surgery and or face and neck lifting procedures to create and overall rejuvenated look.
