Facial Resurfacing: Ready for Spring
Before & After Dermabrasion by Dr Hodgkinson
Winter is usually the season of choice for facial resurfacing. It is the time of year when most of our time is spent indoors and when we can more easily avoid the harsh effects of the sun when recovering from corrective treatment. There are several ways in which the skin can be rejuvenated. People can be easily confused about the difference between laserbrasion, dermabrasion, and chemical peels. Laserbrasion, through the use of a powerful laser light is used to target wrinkles mainly around the lower eyelids. Dermabrasion is very good for vertical wrinkles around the mouth or smokers’ lines and scars from acne. A fine diamond rotating file is used to abrade the skin and remove the wrinkles and scarring that are below the skin surface. Chemical peels are used to address the splotchiness, brownness, and sallowness of the skin due to excessive exposure to the sun. Another form of resurfacing that may be suitable for you is the removal of fine veins around your cheeks and nose with a KTP laser. The KTP laser uses light and heat to destroy damaged blood vessels, therefore reducing redness on the face. This type of treatment is performed at the clinic by our cosmetic treatment specialist Maria-Elena.
These procedures, except for the KTP laser, are usually carried out under a light general anaesthetic on an outpatient surgical basis and take about one hour. You must be vigilant post-operatively to stay out of the winter sun for about 10 days after surgery and then be careful to slather on the sunscreen when exposed to direct sunlight. However, it is definitely worth the care as facial resurfacing gives a dramatic improvement to the complexion. I find that patients come to have these different forms of resurfacing when they are considering attending special events such as an upcoming wedding and know they are going to be photographed.
