What are double eyelids and eyelid fold surgery?
Not all Asian people have an upper eyelid fold when they open their eyes and yet most Asian nations find this “double eyelids” aesthetic look to be desirable. Whether or not a person has the fold does not depend on their nationality but their genetics.
I want double eyelids. What can I do?
So what can you do if you want to create the double eyelid look? Some doctors use a very simple method of placing a stitch through the eyelid but this only gives a temporary and not very reliable result. The surgical procedure that creates the best, permanent result involves making an attachment between the levator muscle that lifts the eyelid and the skin of the eyelid. Approximately 60% of Asian patients have a natural attachment, but it is usually much lower than in Caucasians.
It is very important to make the fold the correct height. If a Caucasian height is chosen it may look unnatural for an Asian so a mid-height is usually best. The procedure involves very carefully making a symmetrical incision, removing a very conservative amount of fat and stitching a connection between the levator muscle and the skin. Twilight sedation is used so the patient can open and close their eyes during the procedure to ensure the folds are absolutely symmetrical.
The procedure is performed in Dr Hodgkinson’s fully licensed and accredited day surgery facility to ensure your safety and the patient is able to go home after the surgery. Dr Hodgkinson has experience collaborating with Asian surgeons in many nations including China, Japan and Korea to ensure that his results are world class.
