Nose Reshaping FAQs
We find the most common age for people to undergo nose surgery is in their young adult years between the ages of 18 and 30, especially for those starting their university education or beginning new careers.
In fact, it is during the school or university summer holidays that we see the most student-aged patients for nose surgery. The full age range of patients, however, extends from 16 to 75! Improving a patient’s profile can dramatically enhance their overall appearance, and often rhinoplasty is combined with a cosmetic procedure on the chin or facial rejuvenation surgery to balance and enhance the look of the face as a whole.
Before and After Rhinoplasty
We encourage patients to make use of the many tools we have available to help them explain to us what they want to achieve including: our articles, blog posts, galleries of “before and after” photos of actual patients, clinical procedural brochures, videos and digital computer imaging. All of these tools play a vital role in helping us to communicate with our patients and to understand their expectations and desired result.
We encourage patients to describe what they want and show us photos of the noses that he or she likes. It is also helpful for them to share photos of any relative of theirs who they think has a particularly attractive nose. Patients may bring photos of models, celebrities, or film actors from popular magazines. This is not discouraged but rather encouraged as a further tool for communication. Clear, accurate communication between surgeon and patient is a top priority to allow a proper assessment to be made and realistic advice to be given.
Before and After Nose Surgery – Rhinoplasty
A nose job can also be referred to as rhinoplasty. The trials and tribulations of pop icon Michael Jackson drew much comment on rhinoplasty and nose jobs. Certainly the fear of many patients seeking rhinoplasty is of ending up with a nose that has an obviously operated-on look so they are tagged as having had a ‘nose job’.
Too much tissue taken out of the tip of the nose, too great a reduction of the dorsum or bridge of the nose and/or an inappropriate repositioning of the nasal bones, all by inexperienced surgeons are the usual causes of the so-called nose job.
Another common cause is the use of plastic in the nose. These ‘plastic (or silicone) implants’ are common amongst Asian patients and are rarely successful in the long term.
Rhinoplasty if done correctly by a surgeon with experience and expertise can be one of the most satisfying procedures, beautifying the face and improving the patient’s profile. Any breathing problems can also be dealt with at the same time.
Proportion and balance of features are very important considerations with nasal reshaping, known as Rhinoplasty. The shape of the face and the chin as well as the position of the eyes should all be taken in consideration when contemplating changing the shape of your nose.
We find that digital imaging and image manipulation can often give the patient a better visual idea of what the end result might be. We encourage patients to bring photos of noses they like so we can discuss their expectations and what is realistic. Selfies greatly alter the appearance of the nose and clear communication with us is essential. This is why we perform computer imaging with you to determine your aesthetic goals.
The trend is away from making a too-cute or stylised nose and more towards individualised rhinoplasty to suit both the patient’s features as well as aesthetic requirements. No one nose suits every patient.
Before and After Rhinoplasty
The reason why so many people come to see Dr. Hodgkinson is his preparation process in which he will discuss the options and outcomes of your procedure, while also using the Alter Image program to provide a visual example of your expected results to help make your decision.
You will find peace of mind knowing that your goals will be taken into account with your current situation to ensure your nasal bridge procedure will provide an outcome that you’ll love, reinstating your self-confidence and comfort.
It may be the case that a different procedure is better suited to your goals, and if so, Dr. Hodgkinson will discuss this with you. This exemplifies the importance of the consultation process to find the best path forward for you.
That way, you will understand the potential and realistic outcomes, as well as any associated risks. If you have any questions, they will be answered during this time, and Dr. Hodgkinson will ensure that you are comfortable with all decisions before surgery is confirmed.
The ‘Alter Image’ program allows Dr. Hodgkinson to let you see the achievable natural outcome of your procedure.
This is often one of the largest fears faced by patients when it comes to having a nose augmentation. Dr. Hodgkinson’s specialty across all procedures is a sensitivity to a range of elements. This includes the look of the person’s face, as well as gender, ethnic background, and family resemblance. A good result is a nose nobody notices as it blends and harmonises well with your other features, especially your profile.
A before and after rhinoplasty procedure as performed by Dr. Hodgkinson
When it comes to the rhinoplasty procedure, Dr. Hodgkinson is an expert who works hard to individualise the results for every one of his patients, so the new look is natural and balanced. This, in turn, means that the results do not show signs of obvious surgical intervention.
Most patients have a good idea about what they dislike about their nose and what they want done but a big concern is how much time they will miss from work or studies and/or how much discomfort they will experience. The surgery surprisingly causes minimal discomfort and oral painkillers such as Panadol can control this. Recovery from rhinoplasty takes approximately seven to ten days and you can resume most activities within two weeks, except for contact sports. Rigorous activities can be resumed at about six weeks.
The hard work of our team, along with the state-of-art equipment and materials we use create the most comfortable environment possible for patients. We aim for minimal postoperative sedation and the quickest recovery period possible. You will likely feel strange as the anaesthetic wears off and experience some soreness, swelling, or discomfort, which is all completely normal.
You will also likely feel tired after surgery and have a splint placed across your nose to assist in the healing process for around seven days after surgery and with paper tape for several weeks after that. We ensure that you are well-informed when it comes to the healing process so there will be no shocks or surprises after your procedure. You are encouraged to ask any question that you may have to ensure you are entirely comfortable with what will happen before, during or after a rhinoplasty surgery.
Dr. Hodgkinson places great importance on working at the highest levels of safety and care, which is why the thousands of nose surgeries he has performed over his long career have experienced no adverse or negative risks. Part of our responsibility as medical practitioners requires us, however, to inform you of any possible associated risks for the surgical procedures we provide.
Your risks are related to your general health, and even in the best of hands, sometimes (about 5%) of healing doesn’t go as expected, and a touch up operation may be needed at 6-12 months to refine the result.
Prior surgery by some other surgeon, taking recreational drugs and trauma all contribute to unpredictable healing after rhinoplasty.
The incisions that are made as part of this process are inconspicuous, along with any scarring that will fade or lessen with time.
Before and 6 months after Rhinoplasty
All necessary information about every aspect of your procedure will be provided well in advance by Dr. Hodgkinson’s experienced team. This includes specific post-operative instructions to ensure you have nothing less than the best recovery process possible.
To help ensure this, it is vital that you follow any instructions that are given to you for the healing process to the letter to achieve the best results. Rhinoplasty offers results that are evident immediately, but you will experience some swelling or bruising that will subside over several months. After this, the actual form of your new look will be revealed.
The final results can take up to a year to form as cartilage can reshape over time as it adjusts to the new shape of your nose.
Yes it can. At the same time that nose reshaping surgery (rhinoplasty) is carried out, issues with breathing can also be addressed.
If the septum, the internal division between the nostrils, has been twisted or damaged from trauma this can be fixed along with any external structures to ‘free-up’ your airways and improve your breathing. This procedure is called a ‘septoplasty’. Dr Hodgkinson well do testing of your breathing and may do X-rays to better determine your breathing passages.
The two procedures of rhinoplasty and septoplasty can be carried out at the same time, improving both the appearance and the function of the nose; however, the surgery will usually require a more invasive technique than the one used for closed nose tip surgery. It is vital that you make Dr. Hodgkinson aware of the key drivers for your want of surgery, be they aesthetic or functional, so he can make an appropriate assessment and determine the best path forward for your needs and wants.

A rhinoplasty is one of the most satisfying procedures, beautifying the face and improving the patient’s profile. Any breathing problems can be dealt with at the same time. To review some of Dr. Hodgkinson’s rhinoplasty cases, please check out our Patients’ Before and After Gallery.
Dr. Hodgkinson first tests the breathing function of every patient with existing nasal trauma while evaluating the inside structures of the nose. This is a vital step in the process of determining the best path forward and the opportunities for the outside appearance of the nose. Swelling is different from patient to patient and skin thickness can mean that the result takes up to a year to reveal itself. Thick skin may need treatment by dermatological medication to shrink the thick skin.
Dr. Hodgkinson uses a computer imaging tool to help provide a visual idea of what the nose shape will look like post-procedure, offering various looks that best complement the overall facial features.
It is crucial to note that even though nasal tip surgery is a less invasive procedure, it is still a surgery, which brings with it an element of risk. Dr. Hodgkinson’s team will explain all of this in-depth during your consultation.
You will have great peace of mind; however, in knowing that over a 30-year career, Dr. Hodgkinson has never experienced a serious or life-threatening complication with any of his patients post-surgery.
With thousands of rhinoplasties performed, Dr. Hodgkinson’s stellar safety record speaks for itself. He and his team ensure the highest levels of safety, guaranteeing the most exceptional level of care for every patient.
While every surgical procedure has a level of risk or complication that may be present, you should be aware of them to stay properly informed. If you are a patient with a poor medical history or are psychologically unstable, you may not be a suitable candidate for this procedure.
Any relevant risks will be explained during your consultation; and in cases of rhinoplasty, the small risks can be infection, bruising, or bleeding, along with a low risk of issues concerning the anaesthetic.
All of Dr. Hodgkinson’s patients have experienced high-levels of care and safety due to his skill level and strong focus on quality aftercare.
As it is only the cartilage in your nose that is being augmented during this procedure and not the underlying bones, both surgery and recovery time is shorter than a full rhinoplasty. You will likely experience minimal bruising and swelling, which will subside over time.
Nose tip surgery is a subtle procedure but can create a drastic change to your appearance, but it should be noted that it can take up to six months for all swelling to disappear. You will be able to return to work after approximately 1-2 weeks.
It certainly can. Dr. Hodgkinson is an expert in altering flat noses in both Caucasians and Oriental rhinoplasty. He is able to build up the bridge of the nose to provide an improved aesthetic, creating a better balance with the eyes. Asian patients find this gives a more Eurasian appearance, which they prefer.

This procedure can be done with silicone however these are considerable problems long term with foreign material in the nose. Dr. Hodgkinson’s unique process uses the patient’s own tissue or a small piece of bone from the elbow to produce a more refined profile creating a more desirable appearance when viewing the face from the front. This result lasts a lifetime.
This highlights the upper part of the face and has been performed by Dr. Hodgkinson hundreds of times with few problems, as opposed to the silicone process, which tends to extrude or be rejected over time.
It is important to note that Dr. Hodgkinson is an expert in the Asian rhinoplasty procedure, performing it thousands of times always ensuring the highest levels of safety and care. Every surgical procedure presents potential risk.
If Dr Hodgkinson uses the bone and cartilage graft, its important not to overextend the elbow for at least 6 weeks. Problems with the donor site are rare, but can include a bursa or swelling that may need drainage or reversal later as a minor procedure.
Following instructions after surgery is critical for uneventful healing.
Asian rhinoplasty causes minimal discomfort and any pain experienced after the procedure can be lessened with oral painkillers such as Panadol. The recovery period for Asian rhinoplasty will take approximately seven to ten days with most activities able to be resumed within two weeks. The one exception to this is contact sports for which patients should wait roughly six weeks before resuming.
Dr. Hodgkinson’s expert team and state-of-the-art Day Surgery facility will create the most comfortable environment possible for all patients. The primary goal is always minimal post-operative sedation along with the quickest recovery period possible. Most patients experience a slightly strange feeling as the anaesthetic wears off, and it is not uncommon to also experience a level of tiredness, soreness, swelling, or discomfort.

You will have a splint placed across your nose for around seven days after surgery. This will help quicken the healing process, and paper tape will also be required for a further several weeks once the splint is removed. Our team will provide all the relevant information about your post-operative care, and we encourage all patients to ask any questions necessary to ensure they are entirely at ease with the process of their procedure and recovery.
It has been proven that Dermal Fillers are safe for use in the human body, and Dr. Hodgkinson only uses products with proven safety records. As mentioned earlier, we are unable to name the products on our website; however, Dermal Fillers are made up of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a substance that occurs naturally in the cells of the skin. This means there is no risk of allergic reactions, and Dermal Fillers are even safe for people with food sensitivities.
The brands of Dermal Fillers used by Dr. Hodgkinson are available in many countries all over the world and have been used as an injectable cosmetic treatment for more than two decades with an exceptional track record of safety.
All injections come with risks such as swelling, bruising, and bleeding, and it is important to keep in mind that the nose is a particularly delicate area of the face. The blood supply to the nose is quite weak, especially in noses that have already undergone a previous surgery. For these reasons, it is crucial that your surgeon has experience with non-surgical nose jobs to diminish the level of risk.
As far as injectable pain is concerned, Dermal Fillers create a low level to none. Most patients say it is nearly painless, and a topical cream can be used to numb the area if the pain experienced is moderate. The tip of the nose is the most sensitive area; however, many patients can generally go straight back to work after the procedure with merely a small red or slightly bruised area to contend with for roughly a week. There is a reason why this procedure is often referred to as the lunchtime nose job. These only last 6 months and are limited in what they can achieve.
