“Super Neck” Special Invitation & Presenter at “All About FACE II” Conference of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery - Curitiba, Brazil August 2019
I was honoured to be one of three international plastic surgeons invited by leading “Super Neck” surgeon Andre Auersvald, from Curitiba Brazil, a large city in the state of Parana, to observe four days of facelifting surgery by Andre and his brother Luiz. The honour was heightened as the other invited surgeons were the renowned Chiara Botti of Italy and Tony Wolfe of the United States. All three of us felt privileged to observe as both the brothers Andre and Luiz are not only extremely experienced plastic surgeons but operate with a the most capable team of anesthetists and scrub nurses in performing complex procedures on patients who present with very difficult, fleshy and full necks seeking rejuvenation. During our visit, we were also privy to see the brothers’ postoperative results in their private clinic. The technically challenging methods employed by the brothers Auersvald in neck lifting and neck sculpting provided both me and my visiting colleagues with some very important tips and techniques which I will employ as appropriate to continue to enhance my work both for my patients and in my ongoing developments of techniques as a member of the “Super Neck” group.
The visit to the Auersvalds was followed by the “All About Face II” conference of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery in Curitiba. This was an opportunity for me to catch up with many colleagues and friends from Brazil with whom I have visited and collaborated and who have visited me in Sydney over many years. I was invited as a Presenter at the conference and delivered two papers: “Neck Lifting by the Modified Fogli Technique” and “The Management of Exposed Silicone Implants of the Nose usually in Asian Patients”.
There were many excellent talks given by both the Brazilian and international surgeons at the conference and this close contact with highly skilled international surgeons I find to be not only important but inspirational to me as I am always continuing to seek out tips and techniques that I believe will add value to and integrate well into my practice.
In addition to aesthetic surgery, I also was able to pursue my major interest in cleft lip and palate and craniofacial surgery whilst in Curitiba. Dr Renato Freitus, director of the Craniofacial Unit was kind enough to invite me to visit his facility. This spectacular unit has 40 staff who perform one hundred cleft surgeries a month. Dr Freitus’ willingness to share his expertise and understanding of these cases is of great value to me and to Operation Restore Hope (ORH), the cleft and craniofacial surgical charity which I founded over 25 years ago. ORH is a major supporter of the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) Craniofacial Unit and the work of Dr Taps Gurango in particular. On a day to day basis, the charity is presented with numerous children both from Metro Manila and the provinces with major craniofacial problems that we support financially and intellectually.
Curitiba was already the third major international conference so far to which I have accepted an invitation to present this year. I always like to take these opportunities when possible given my other commitments to my patients, my practice and of course my charity Operation Restore Hope. Both these conferences, especially in putting my work up to scrutiny and peer review as well as the teaching aspect in addition to visiting top surgeons in my field for one on one sharing ensures that I am not only well informed but offering my patients the best that is available.
