Non Surgical Skin Tightening
What is the most effective treatment?
A recent study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal confirmed something that we had already noted in our results at The Cosmetic & Restorative Surgery Clinic; that Radio Frequency (RF) with Micro Needling delivered superior results to Radio Frequency used in isolation.1 Having witnessed the same advancements as early as 2013, Dr Hodgkinson and our treatment specialists made the move from a superficial RF system alone to INFINI which can be used like the older systems both topically but also with micro needling which allows the RF energy to be precisely targeted and controlled into a specific layer of the dermis up to 3.5 mm in depth.
Dr Hodgkinson was the first in Australia to adopt Thermage® in 2005 having had the privilege of working with the technology in the US prior to its release in Australia. The results of delivering the radio frequency superficially through the dermis with their ThermaCool® system were real and for the first time there was a technology that delivered results for women and men, typically in their 30’s or 40’ who needed some tightening and refining of the skin but who were not yet ready for a facelift. The key to Thermage® was choosing candidates carefully as it was not nor can it ever be a substitute for a surgical facelift for patients with greater laxity.
Why Combine Micro Needling with RF Treatment?
The results of delivering the radio frequency only superficially however were limited. This can be best understood by understanding the principles on which RF treatments are based. The concept of the treatment is to employ electromagnetic energy to generate heat which in turn when applied to the dermis results in a contraction of the collagen fibres and hence the skin and over time stimulate the formation of new collagen in the tissues. Therefore, if the delivery of the RF could be targeted to not only the intensity required but the depth of the dermis, the contraction of the collagen fibres and the stimulation of the collagen growth would be greater and the result not as superficial. This is why micro-needling combined with the delivery of RF has taken this technology to a new level.
INFINI for Skin Tightening & Refinement as well as Acne Scarring
Targeting the deeper tissues INFINI has also been proven to not only be effective for the tightening of lax skin but very effective in the treatment of large pores and acne scarring as it can both refine the skin as well as stimulate the repair of the deeper layers of the dermis. INFINI works best when it is delivered in a series of treatments – usually three to stimulate the collagen growth. These treatments can be spaced anywhere from weekly to monthly depending on the intensity of the treatment required to achieve the desired result.
Any discomfort from INFINI can be controlled either by topical anaesthetics or by the use of a local block much like used by dentists. The skin is pink after treatment but the patient is able to resume normal activities immediately. The other great benefit of INFINI is that it is appropriate for people with pigmented skin unlike some other RF techonologies.
Not a Substitute for a Surgical Facelift
Despite the advancements in technology, treatment with RF technology whether with or without micro-needling is not and never will be a substitute for a surgical facelift when required to achieve the desired result. Whilst these technologies can tighten and improve the quality of the skin and the deeper dermis they cannot reposition skin or deeper layers of muscle and fat that come with ageing over time. As with the older technologies, the most important step is to establish whether or not you are a candidate and will benefit from INFINI. A patient with sagging or laxity due to deterioration of the musculature of the face or with excess loose skin will not get the appropriate benefit from these treatments. Again, the patient group most likely to benefit from these treatments are women and men in their 30’s and 40’s although as we all age differently; there are exceptions to every rule. If Dr Hodgkinson or our treatment specialists do not believe that you will achieve the result you desire, we will advise you honestly. It is important to us that you are well informed and know what you can realistically expect from your treatment.
