ICAPS 2014 Report

ICAPS 2014

Twenty five of the world’s top plastic surgeons convened for a three day meeting in Vienna, Austria, 11 May to 17 May 2014.  Two surgeons from Australia participated, myself and my close associate Dr Bryan Mendelson from Melbourne.

Some of the latest trends were re-evaluated, especially the use of fat grafting around the forehead and implants used to advance the chin in Asian Patients and this was presented by Dr W Wu from Singapore.  Drs Mendelson and Martin from the United States emphasised augmentation enhancement of the brow and periorbital regions to improve the results of the rejuvenation of the upper face.

Dr De La Pena who inspired me to embrace the INFINI microneedling radiofrequency treatments updated his continuing enthusiasm with the procedure.  Various techniques for facelifting and neck lifting by surgeons from the United States and Europe were discussed and emphasised that not one technique alone suffices.  Assessment and performance of various techniques by experienced (greater than 25 years) surgeons produce gratifying results for patients and surgeons alike.  The tight, hard face look has been avoided using newer techniques.

Enthusiasm for fat injecting as an adjunct for surgical procedures is increasing but it is technique specific and needs evaluation of the face which has shrunken as part of the ageing process.

Ethnic noses, middle eastern noses and South American noses were discussed with the emphasis on different aesthetic goals and anatomical variation.

Buttock implants were popular in Italy and the quartz Silimed implant is preferred.  Abdominoplasties and total body lifts after weight loss were also presented, a growing area of plastic surgery.

By this collegiate contact and interaction with the leaders in our field, my patients benefit by the purchase of the most effective non-surgical equipment and the refinement of surgical techniques honed over 30 years of a busy cosmetic plastic surgical practice here and in the United States.
