Have you heard of the daddy do-over?

Here at the Cosmetic & Restorative Surgery Clinic 30% of our patients are men and actually have been for quite a while so it was no surprise to us when the industry at large started to take note of the rising percentage of men seeking cosmetic plastic surgery.  They are now even coming up with catch phrases for groups of men seeking improvement and rejuvenation just like they have for women.

Every plastic surgeon and most people interested in plastic surgery have heard of the “Mummy Makeover” which features surgery to help women regain their figures after childbirth but how many have heard of the “Daddy Do-Over”?  The term became popular as early as 2014 in the United States with the noticeable increase industry wide of middle-aged men seeking cosmetic surgery to regain their youthful appearance.

Vanity and hiding signs of ageing are not new to men.  For generations, men have been boot-blacking their hair to appear less grey and donning toupees before hair transplant surgery became commonplace.  Today, however, men are opting for anything from cosmedical treatments to surgery.

What is different about the Daddy Do-Over is that it does not comprise a set of treatments or procedures but refers more to a generational shift in men in the middle years just after having children who want to keep their competitive edge.  The most common surgeries in this age group would be eyelid surgery to overcome that tired and haggard look hard won through sleepless nights of little ones or waiting up for the teenagers and liposuction/liposculpture to deal with the middle age spread from too much time behind the desk or wheel and of course possibly surgery for man boobs.  Both droopy eyelids and that tire around the middle or gut can be ageing and make men look less vibrant.  Non-surgical treatments that are popular are injectibles to get rid of angry lines aka wrinkles and vascular laser to get rid of those red broken veins on the face around the nose, cheeks and chin that make the skin look tired and old.  Of course, men seek all kinds of procedures from head to toe depending on their age, physique and genes.
