Dr. Hodgkinson at the International Oriental Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Dr. Hodgkinson invited to lecture at another prestigious International Congress: The Oriental Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Dr Darryl Hodgkinson was again on the faculty of another prestigious international congress where speakers were invited from around the world including the Americas, Europe and Asia.  The 16th International Congress of OSAPS (Oriental Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) was held this July in, Bali, Indonesia. Dr Hodgkinson both moderated sessions on Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping surgery) as well as giving Presentations on Breast Augmentation (breast implants) for Patients with Chest Wall Deformities & Managing Nasal Implants in Rhinoplasty.

Dr Hodgkinson’s presentations were very well received as he dealt with issues that are rarely discussed or published in plastic surgical forums.  The issue of women who have chest wall deformities, which range from scoliosis (curvature of the spine), to pectus excavatum (where the breastbone sinks into the chest) or pectus carinatum (where the breastbone protrudes from the chest), is a real one and much more common than most people would think.  After all, no one is perfectly symmetrical and so these issues need to be identified, measured and addressed for if they exist, the use of simple breast implants alone will not mask the problem but accentuate it if any marked asymmetries or chest wall deformities are present.

Dr Hodgkinson’s other presentation on implants for the nasal dorsum (implants used to augment the bridge of the nose or create the “high nose”) was also well received.  Nasal implants whilst useful in reconstructing noses are also especially in Asian countries for patients seeking a more Eurasian or “high nosed” appearance.  Dr Hodgkinson has published and presented many times his use of autogenous tissue (the patient’s own bone or cartilage) for building up the bridge of the nose as opposed to the use of silicone or artificial implants.  The problem with many artificial implants is that as they are foreign substances close to the surface of the skin, over time, the body will try to eject the implant and the implant will start to extrude (or push out of the skin) usually from the tip of the nose with the natural downward pressure on the tissues as the implant itself does not adhere to the normal structures of the nose.  The difference with autogenous tissues, such as bone, is that they in coming from the patient’s own body are literally implanted and come to form part of the natural tissues of the nose providing not only for a stable but long term solution.

Dr Hodgkinson also served as the moderator for a panel on rhinoplasty surgery in which all forms of aesthetic rhinoplasty were discussed by a group on international experts on the subject.  These international forums and meetings are critical for surgeons to attend to ensure not only that they are up-to-date with the latest techniques but more importantly to present their work at to receive either the praise or constructive criticism of their colleagues to make sure that how they employ these techniques is both safe and effective not only in the eyes of their patients but their peers and colleagues.
