AAWPS 2020 Meeting – Whistler, Canada
I have been privileged to be invited as a member of the American Alpine Workshop in Plastic Surgery (AAWPS). I am the only Australian plastic surgeon member and only 8 international members are allowed to participate with 24 of America’s top plastic surgeons.
This was my third meeting with AAWPS and each of these encounters gives me a unique insight into the minds of some of the finest cutting-edge surgeons and publications in the field of plastic surgery. Every surgeon participating in the workshop is asked to present 4 papers for the other surgeons to comment on, discuss and criticise as appropriate. What these giants of our subspecialty have to share is extremely impressive but every participant is encouraged also to challenge their colleagues and freely ask questions.
I presented papers on nasal reconstruction after skin cancer repair, expansion technique for large defects of the face and on brow and facelifting techniques. I heard fantastic papers on body reconstructions, breast reconstruction, facial nerve palsy reconstruction and craniofacial surgery to name a few.
This is regarded by many in attendance, most of whom are heads of plastic surgical departments at major hospitals and universities and past presidents of national societies, to be the premier plastic surgery meeting of the year. I learned a great deal and look forward to integrating the newest techniques into my Double Bay practice and to future AAWPS meetings.
